TIPS TO EFFECTIVELY STUDY FROM BASIC LEVEL TO PhD by Twumasi Clement (Cardiff University):

Updated: Dec 12, 2022

Several students have poor learning attitude and that could be due to several other reasons including personal issues, financial problems, low self esteem, etc. I will do my best to uncover my secret and how to effectively study with less memory loss.

See steps below: 👇

The first point to become a great student 👩‍🎓 in any field is to first believe in yourself. Don’t see yourself as a failure or accept the fact that you won’t understand what you are about to study as the most difficult subject can still be learnt. This can be attributable to someone going to the battlefield and already giving up on him or herself. That’s the first thing to do.

Second step is not to feel intimidated by people in your field. Don’t accept it when they put their limits on you. Especially when some make you think this lecturer is very tough and you can’t survive in his class or this subject is a hard nut 🥜 to crack; so quit. At the second stage, you are still preprocessing your brain 🧠 for an effective studies. Confidence is all you need and don’t let them make you think you know nothing as you might even be far better than them. It’s from experience.

Third step is to pick up the books 📚 and be ready for war. The zeal and enthusiasm you give in trying to understand the contents of the book is itself a victory. Start to read through the book line by line and don’t skip pages. However, note that the internet is your friend. People you think are smarter than you mostly refer to online including google, YouTubes and other educational sites. You can first of all get a fair idea of whatever you want to study online especially YouTube from one video to another. This is only to give you a fair idea about the subject. Everything is online. So instead of consulting people you think are better than you (which may not be true), first go to YouTube👉👉

The fourth step is to reflect on what you have learnt. What I personally do is to walk and recite/summarize everything I studied or speak to a mirror. People might take you for a mad person when doing that😊. But it’s a good practice. If it requires more mathematical and statistical proofs and theorem, I get a new book and fill it up page by page with all that I learnt and could remember. That’s one way of building retentive memories; because what you are able to remember will stick with you for the rest of your life. Lesson: Never study 📖 and close your book without reflecting or summarizing it up. It really helps if you want to build up smartness and confidence.

The fifth thing is to solve so many questions especially if it is mathematically related. Don’t think you are ok. It’s a mistake most students do. Solve past questions and refer back to your notes when necessary. Seek for help from lecturers and instructors as it’s their job to help you. Don’t think they will sack you. If it’s a reading course which requires essay writing ✍, draft several of such essays and let people proofread for you. Above all, the internet can also be imperative at this stage, as it's an ocean 🌊 of knowledge across several fields. Nothing is new under the sun☀ . Most examiners like to bring past questions; so after intensive studies, solve practice and past questions👉👍🏼

After this stage, you are on your journey to success as nothing can stop you from making the grades and excelling. Getting grade A from all your courses is possible. I tried these skills and had a GPA of 4.0 out of 4.0 (All A's; with Grade A=80% and above) in my master's program in Statistics (MPhil) at the University of Ghana. So, I recommend these techniques to you.🎓📚📖📙

PS:

Message for postgraduate students only😊:

On 6th October 2020, I was selected among the few most exceptional mathematicians and computer scientists of our generation by Heidelberg Laurate, Germany. You can watch my interview with Cambridge University Plus Magazine on how it all started👇!
